Of Small Plates and Dieting

With all the diet fads and exercise routines exist in the market today, no one does it better than curbing your food portions or be selective to what you eat. However, most people believe that eating on a smaller plate will help you to lose weight. According to a study conducted by professor Brian Wansink, people serve themselves in proportion to how big or small the plates they are using. The study confirmed that humans tends to over-serve using larger plates, hence lead to larger food intake. Somehow, they predicted that adults need to use a 10 inch plate for a year in order to lose 18 lbs.

This was also tested by Ted Allen in an episode on Food Network's Food Detectives where they conducted first hand on how much food is consumed in a buffet setting using large plates over smaller plates. The results are astounding showing that more food is being wasted at the buffets because people take more food than they can consume. This concept can help not only for people to lose weight but also conserve food because every year approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food gets lost or wasted according to United Nations Environment Programme.

Don't fret because most food establishments opt to use smaller plates or containers to serve their products. This measure is not only cost-efficient but also it is their initiative to help their customers in getting shape. So for your next trip to your favorite restaurant or food stop, better thank them for using smaller containers for your weight loss.
